is Modi Eating India's Democracy ?
Nowadays people are saying that democracy is ending in India and dictatorship is coming. Is this true?
Kejriwal getting jailed, then Congress's account squeeze, India's rank of 161 in the press index, V-Dem Institute calling India an electoral autocracy, Germany, America etc. speaking about Indian democracy... Do you feel that India is going towards autocracy? Let's see one by one
1- Use of Government Bodies in Election -
Accusations are made against the BJP that they are using the ED and CBI to imprison opposition leaders, for example, Manish Sisodia, Kejriwal, Hemant Soren, etc. All these leaders have been arrested under the PMLA Act, which is a sensitive act and necessary for the country, and its hearings take place in court, which indicates that independent proceedings will be conducted. However, it has also been observed that if a leader against whom a case exists joins the BJP, their arrest gets delayed or whitewashed, but this is not something new; it used to happen during the Congress reign as well, with leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, the Chautala family, Mayawati, etc., facing charges. We cannot say that all this will end as soon as Congress comes into power but no doubt its pace might get reduced.
2- Independence of Election Commission -
The recent Election Commission Act of 2023, which changed the appointment procedure for the Election Commission, is concerning. Previously, the appointment was made by the Chief Justice of India (CIJ), the Prime Minister (PM), and the Leader of the Opposition, but now it is done by the PM, the Leader of the Opposition, and a cabinet minister. The cabinet minister and the PM holding the majority could appoint a Chief Election Commissioner of their choice, which is truly concerning and against the basic structure of the constitution (free and fair elections). Hopefully, the court will declare it void, but the removal process of the Chief Election Commissioner is similar to that of a Supreme Court judge, which makes the Election Commission an independent body.
3. Western Countries and Their Media -
Germany and the USA criticize India’s democracy and interfere in India’s internal matters, which not only reveals their colonial mindset but also criticizes our government and judiciary. When there were farmer protests in Germany, weren’t there human rights violations? This year, eight Indian students were murdered in the USA, and the USA is busy protecting Gurpatwant Singh Pannun (a Khalistani terrorist). Today, the USA is teaching India about democracy when there was a riot at the White House after Donald Trump lost; such a thing has never happened in India after an election. The gangster culture is increasing in the USA, and they are concerned about Manipur in India, which is quite funny. They even portray the image that in Manipur, Hindus are against Christians, and in India (a Hindu majority country), there is opposition against Christians and Muslims. The “we the Germans, we know everything” kind of thinking should be discarded by Germany and the entire Western world. India is a sovereign country.
You might be surprised to know that the independent ranking of Indian media is below that of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. These rankings are published by Western institutions, which downgrade the ranking of Indian media to elevate their own, thereby increasing the credibility of Western media. Western media reports the construction of the Ram Temple as being built after demolishing a Muslim Mosque, without mentioning that there was originally a temple there. Western media portrays the killing of terrorists in Kashmir as human rights violence but remains silent on what the USA has done in Syria, Palestine, and Afghanistan. Western media criticizes the Indian government and India with the motive that India signs trade deals with them or to gain an advantage. For example, when India signed the Rafale deal with France, the German and USA media started criticizing because they wanted to sell their own planes and were trying to create pressure through the media. They also created pressure when India was buying oil from Russia.
So.Blindly trusting Western media and data is futile because they have their own interests behind it.
4. Final view on Democracy -
As we all know, having a heavy majority for one party in a democracy can be harmful, and so can a coalition government. Whenever a coalition government has been in power, Western interference has increased. If the coalition government does not comply with Western countries, they can resort to bribery and other means to topple the government, for example, during the time of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. If there is a full majority, there is a fear that it may lead to an authoritarian rule.
In my view, people should vote for the development of the country rather than focusing on democracy because it is the job of the Supreme Court to protect democracy, as it has done when needed, for example, during Indira Gandhi’s emergency and the electoral bond case. However, as citizens, we must raise our voices against anti-democratic actions, which puts pressure on the court and leads to quick decisions. Otherwise
